Where to place marks on common ID copies
| Copy | Keep clear | Good spot |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar (front) | Photo, number, QR code | White strip below the number |
| PAN card | Photo, PAN, signature box | Right half, below the date of birth |
| Passport bio page | Photo and the two machine-readable lines | Top margin of the scan |
| Voter ID | Photo and EPIC number | Bottom margin |
| Bank passbook first page | Account number, IFSC, bank seal | Blank area at the bottom |
Paper photocopies vs. digital copies
On paper you sign each photocopy with a pen. For online forms, the portal wants an image of a signed copy. You can either sign the paper copy and photograph it, or photograph the original and add your signature here. The second way is quicker and gives a cleaner, smaller file.
For Aadhaar, use Aadhaar card front and back merge to put both sides on one page before signing. Signing a whole certificate set or a long PDF? The self attested document maker puts the same marks on every page at once.
Questions
Should I write “True Copy” or “Self Attested”?
Either is common, and some people write both. “True Copy” says the copy matches the original; “Self Attested” says you, the holder, are vouching for it. Follow the wording in your form’s instructions if it gives any. The tool starts with “True Copy” here and you can add “Self Attested” with one tap.
Can I self attest a masked Aadhaar?
Yes. A masked Aadhaar from the UIDAI website hides the first eight digits and is accepted for most purposes that only need identity, not the full number. Sign it the same way as a full copy.
Is a phone photo good enough, or do I need a scanner?
A phone photo works if the card fills the frame, the text is sharp and there is no glare. Shoot from straight above in daylight and crop out the table.
Which file size should I pick?
200 KB keeps small print readable for most ID cards. Choose 100 KB only if the portal insists on it; text may get soft. For several pages in one file, choose PDF.
Does signing a photocopy make it valid everywhere?
No. The receiving office decides what it accepts and may still ask to see the original. Some purposes, such as affidavits or documents for use abroad, need a notary or gazetted officer instead.
